SALON RAISES MONEY FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH |

According to Joann Schellenbach, director of media relations for the American Cancer Society, the chances of a woman being diagnosed with breast cancer is one in eight. Gini Gramaglia was attacking the disease from a professional and personal standpoint. In addition to her aunt's affliction, Gini G's owner is involved with the disease through her activity in the American Cancer Society's "Look Good Feel Better" program. She counsels cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment on dealing with hair loss and skin, nail and complexion changes. She is also running in the upcoming Race for the Cure, a run that also benefits, among other cancer-related issues, breast cancer treatment. As much as she does to fight the disease, Gramaglia said, hers is far from a lonely battle. "The shop is normally closed on Sundays, and it says a lot about the girls that they're here." Tammie Skocki, a Gini G's employee fore the past year, was there. Her aunt recently succumbed to breast cancer and her mother had it, and survived. She was tending to the hair needs of Janet Brown of Southampton, a salon customer and breast cancer survivor. "It's been a favorite charity of mine," said Brown, whose father died of cancer. "And since I'm a survivor this seemed like a natural for me." Not everyone who dropped in for a cut, manicure or massage had the day marked on their calendar. Some may have been lured by the sight of the clown, a role played by Gramaglia's sister, Gabby. Others like Newtown's Jay Skolnick and fiancée Samantha Klein, were just filling a need. "My fiancée just needed her nails done," Skolnick said. "It's a good cause, and my stepmom is going through chemo right now. I guess coming in was kind of a karma thing." The goal was $5000, but the final tally won't be added up until months' end. Gramaglia plans to sell raffle tickets for baskets of hair and beauty products until the end of the month.
